The last step in making a quilt is adding the binding around the quilt. In this blog post, I’ll provide you with the information you need to finish your Between The Lines quilt.
In the first Sugaridoo BERNINA QAL, I wrote an extensive post about making a binding.
We are, of course, working with a different quilt now, but the technique is exactly the same.
Step-by-Step Guide
Making a binding for a quilt involves several steps. I’ll break them down for you here.
First, we cut the fabric. I cut my strips at 2 inches x the width of the fabric. This is quite narrow. If it’s your first time making a binding, you might want to start with 2 1/2-inch strips instead. The width of the strips is a personal preference, so feel free to adjust it to your liking.
Next, we sew the strips together to form one long strip. This strip should be as long as the perimeter of the quilt plus about 15 inches extra. For our Between the Lines quilt, we need seven strips.
After sewing the strips together, you can fold them in half lengthwise and press them. Fold the fabric with the wrong sides together.
Now, we sew the strips with the open side facing out, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, around the quilt. Make sure to leave a bit of extra binding at both the beginning and the end. You don’t sew all the way around; leave some space open to join the ends of the binding later. For this step, it’s helpful to watch the video below. It will make everything much clearer.
Front or Back?
I prefer to sew the binding to the front of the quilt by machine and then hand-stitch it to the back of the quilt.
You could also sew the binding to both sides of the quilt by machine if you prefer.

In this blog post, you can read all of these steps along with accompanying photos. Be sure to also check out the video I made to go along with it.
Have Fun
Enjoy finishing your quilt! Relish those last few stitches. The binding is like a special finishing touch that you add to your quilt after all your hard work.
Thank you so much for participating in the Between the Lines QAL. See you next time!
Groetjes!
